Vuelta Team SLR 42 - Clincher (Shimano/SRAM 10/11sp) – Wheel Set 1750grams
Wheely GOOD News!
The new Vuelta range of Wheels have just arrived at Identity Cycle.
The Vuelta Team SLR 42 Clincher represents really awesome value and they have great durability and will handle all weather and road conditions easily.
This wheel set is a composite of Alloy Rim and Carbon Fairing, this combination of materials gives you heat dispersion, durability and all weather braking of Alloy and the Carbon Fairing gives you the aero profile which makes for sweet performing versatile fast package.
The best way to think of this wheel set is that it is a great all-rounder hills, descents, the flats it can do it all, also think of it as alloy rim with the aero assistance of carbon fibre faring.
The hubs are silky smooth and spin on premium quality sealed bearings that deliver a long service life and can be replaced when the time comes. The front hub has 2 sealed bearing and the rear hub has 4 sealed bearing to spread the load more equally across the whole axel length this improves wear and strength significantly - 7075 Alloy CNC axels are used front and rear.
Aerodynamics: the 42mm aero profile helps cuts through the wind/air significantly more than a standard semi aero box section double wall alloy rim,. This wheels set like the whole Vuelta range has very high quality finish and shows the maturity of quality manufacturing facility. 42mm rims are also easier to manageable in cross winds so if you are lucky enough to be in the 65kg down bracket you will not get blown around with these puppy’s. Like all the Vuelta wheels they have nice rounded nose that also improves stability and steer-ability in strong cross winds. The spoke count on the front at 12 spokes gives a huge aero advantage and 16 at the rear combined with nicely shaped profile makes these wheels FAST!
Like all Vuelta wheels they are Hand Made and Hand Tested, what’s that mean to you?
Most commercial aftermarket wheels are made by machines, machines do a good job to a point but they never come close to 100% true in my experience and if they get closes its because they have low tension which makes for softer less responsive wheels that can come out of true quickly. Machines can come out of calibration and can also be effected by temperature changes and just don’t have the sensory feel of Human. Wheel Building take great skill and great feel and it’s a methodical sensory process, every spoke is ideally is under the same balanced tension making for a wheel that in dead straight and that will stay straight even after intense use, a wheel with unbalanced spoke tension can be straight to start with and but it will come out of true after a couple of uses.
Vuelta also Hand Test every wheel this is very important – it is done for Quality Control and once a wheel is tensioned it needs to bed in, by intensely loading the wheel through the hubs the spoke heads at either end, bed into the surface of the matching hub and rim anchor point. After this intese loading that simulates some spirited riding the spoke tension can alter and the whole wheel again needs to re-tensioned and checked until the spoke tension is again in balance, the wheel is again tested until there is no change to the wheels balance even after extreme loading – then you have a perfect build – This is what Vuelta do with their wheels, most brands do not do this – Vuelta do deliver you a true custom build.
Vuelta even use forged Sapim CX-Ray 2.0 Bladed spokes to ensure perfect length and tensile strength and easy of aftermarket accessibility, many companies have tried to make the humble spoke but only Sapim and DT get it right. Vuelta also use straight pull spokes which are now well proven to offer a longer fatigue life than the older bent hook style, straight pull spokes are easier to work with and service.
The Team SLR 42 wheels run 2 Cross spoke pattern in the front and the rear, the hubs have been designed to deliver the best possible durable build from this pattern, 2 cross offers a little more vertical compliance than radial and the Alloy/Carbon composite build with this wheel set is very strong so a bit of extra vertical compliance in the spoke patter is a welcome addition. 2 Cross is almost the same torsional resistance as a 3 cross but also ends up being lighter than running 3 Cross.
Vuelta make great wheels - They supply a multitude of trade teams and major brands with OE (original equipment) wheels for the last decade. Because Vuelta supply vast numbers of wheels to the market place, they get a large amount of feedback on what works and what doesn’t work.
So you can be assured when it comes to making their own wheels Vuelta use well proven designs and construction methods so you get a wheel set that is super reliable and will deliver great performance at a very competitive price for the quality!
Nothing increases performance and curb appeal than a good set of wheels and if you buy the right set they will give you notable increase in speed.
Bicycle wheels as they spin they increase in weight 2-3 times, so saving just one gram on wheels is like saving 2-3 grams so when you save 100g or 200g per wheel set the difference is massive. You will be able to maintain higher speeds, change direction faster, accelerate faster and even cut through the wind faster – its all good news!!!
Comparisons
Comparable Mavic Cosmic Pro are 180grams heavier over the pair and up to $900.00 more - twice the cost!
Comparable Fulcrum Racing Zero C17 wheels are 360grams lighter over the pair but also $700.00 more with 15mm less profile so a little slower at high speed.
Shimano Dura ACE as a comparison run loose ball hubs with a sealed mechanism they are very high quality good hubs and in this case are comparable to good quality sealed bearing but can be harder to maintain long term and the do require more servicing, The Shimano are up to $1200 more and but are 342grams lighter – Vuelta have more aero profile on the spoke and the Rim as well
Warranty
Vuelta wheels come with 1 year Warranty against faulty manufacturing and materials
Warranty Notes and Service Considerations:
Wheels in general can suffer from misuse and accidental damage more than any other part on your bike, you make a mistake and hit a pot hole or curb or you just ride brick like and don’t absorb bumps through your contact points you will be hard on any wheels - these are the reality’s!
Vueltas wheels come with brake pads as standard equipment.
It quite notable that Vuelta Wheels require no special proprietary tools to do service work and the spokes are no special one-offs so they will also be easily sourced from your local bike shop/Sapim dealer.
Replacement Shimano/Sram style Freewheels 10/11speed can be sourced for $60.00 and Campeg style for $80.00 – they have a sealed mechanism and spin smooth with a very precise solid engagement and have proven track record for being reliable. Internally they are have a 4 spring loaded paws with 32 teeth of engagement.
