Exciting News! The new Ksyrium Pro whee set with Premium Mavic tyres (Shimano/SRAM 10/11SP) has arrived at Identity Cycle – Mavic the most established name in the wheel business, the very same company that provides neutral wheel support at the Tour De France must be ticking quite a few boxes to get that responsibility!
Nothing adds performance to your bike more than wheel set, they give you speed and buy the right set you get durability and the ability to maintain if needed. If you save 1gram on a wheel set it like saving 3-4grams as once they start rotating the base mass increases 2 x 4 times so save 100grams your actually saving 300-400grams this is hugely significant when our body struggles to push out .4 of horse power.
The Ksyrium Pro has all the same technology as the Ksyrium Pro SL, which has set a new benchmark for modern wheel building.
The Ksyrium Pro is one of the few wheels that is certified to carry the exacting quality assurance standards set by independent international governing body – ASTM, the Ksyrium Pro wheels are equally happy spinning effortlessly on fast rolling terrain or scaling mountain courses with agility and strength, they are perfect for 2 hour power rides or all-day adventures. Bottom line (fast - reliable and rigid)
The new Ksyrium Pro rim is created using Mavic’s outstanding knowledge of Alloy Alchemy where not only do they use best Alloy mixes for strength, durability and weight, they also take the formed they and machine away unwanted grams with a new 4D machining process that ensures that you have strength where you need it and the weight gone where you don’t need it. With these latest rims it beautifully done with sooth transitions – you can hardly see where it has been done and not done.
If you not familiar with Mavic Ksyriums – wheels of this quality have a level the engineering that is pretty mind blowing – the attention to detail and the work that goes into improving every aspect of the wheels design and construction and materials is truly amazing!!
One of the key areas is the spoke holes which are internally caped and threaded internally – if you can’t visualize this think of this - you have flat table, you drill hole through a table, the hole is about the same size as drinking glass, you put a drinking glass under the table – this is now a capped hole but in the Mavic’s rim case the glass and table are formed in one piece of exotic aerospace grade alloys. The inside of the capped hole is threaded and then super strong alloy spoke screws into the capped hole – so the end effect is rim with no holes and perfect structural integrity – Since all the power from the rider and the spoke tension is transmitted through every spoke holes to drive the wheel dynamically forward with every pedal stroke to makes a significant improvement here with little weight penalty is huge! This system also ties in well with their forged alloy aero spokes that are lighter than steel and stronger. All sounds good doesn’t IT!
The new Ksyrium Pro utilized a new rim shape, which is pimped out by two more millimetres. That might not sound much, but when combined with 25mm tyres it increases the air volume by 18%. This extra volume means you can lower the tyre pressure by 20 PSI while maintaining the same rolling resistance as with a narrower rim and tyre. The result is greatly improved comfort with no compromise on rolling efficiency to keep you fast on the long haul. And despite the lower tyre pressure, the increased distance between the rim edge and the ground (thanks to the extra air) means pinch flats are easily avoided. The only thing you could say with old Ksyruims is that on rough road the road a little solid so this upgrade is particularly good on this wheels set.
Another great up-grade which old Mavic riders may not be aware of is the Hubs now run ABEC 9 Sealed bearings, simple, fast, reliable and serviceable – this is exactly what you want.
Spoke pattern is offset on the rim and the radial spoking on the drive side means that the spoke tension ends up being very balanced on the Drive-Side vs Non-Drive Side – this big factor in a good wheels as most wheels have large in-balance here and in Australia we ride on the Left shoulder so camber of the road is always angled up and away from the drive side so the drive side cop’s a lot of loading and abuse. This means you have a balanced spoke tension that is shared more equally left to right, which means less problems/fatigue down the track.
If your heavier rider in particular – that’s about 65% of us, and you’re in the 80kg – 100+ kg these are one of the few uber high end wheels that take the abuse better than others, the 60-65kg boys can ride almost anything.
Interesting fun fact is that ASTM CATEGORY 2: are rated for:
- Offroad with jumps less than 15cm
For a longer longevity of the wheel, Mavic recommends that the total weight supported by the wheels doesn't exceed 120kg, bike included
What do Mavic Say - Everything else riders love about the Ksyrium Pro stays the same including the combination of low weight, stiffness and durability for unsurpassed ride quality. It’s thanks to key features adapted from the Ksyrium Pro SL: The Zicral alloy spokes are stiffer, stronger and lighter than traditional stainless steel spokes and Isopulse lacing pattern (radial lacing on the drive side) allows a more balanced spoke tension, giving a more stable and stiffer wheel, especially for heavy loads. Fore drilling creates the strongest possible connection between rim and spokes, with no holes in the upper bridge of the rim to increase stiffness by about 20%, and no rim tape needed (another 40g saved). Of course Mavic's new ISM4D rim means each part of the rim is precisely machined using just the right amount of material needed to provide stiffness and strength, while maintaining weight at just 400g and a total wheel weight of only 1475g.
They come standard fitted with Mavic Yksion Pro tyres, tubes and rim tape, the tyres offer a great balance of grip, rolling resistance and a low weight of only 205g in 25mm thanks to the supple 127 TPI casing, Kevlar beads and Mavic's well-balanced rubber compound. The front wheel has the Griplink version with a specific tread pattern to evacuate water quickly when cornering, increasing confidence and speed in difficult conditions. It also offers a very strong Kevlar puncture protection for added safety. The rear wheel comes with the Powerlink version; with a more supple nylon puncture protection instead of Kevlar to lower rolling resistance. To reduce rolling resistance and increase speed even further, the tread pattern is optimized to reduce the pressure on the ground. This also improves water evacuation from the centre to increase traction and efficiency in wet conditions.
