Exciting News! The new Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon Wheel Set (font and rear) with premium Mavic Tyres, has arrived at Identity Cycle.
Mavic the most established name in the wheel business, the very same company that provides neutral wheel support at the Tour De France must be ticking quite a few boxes to get that responsibility!
Nothing adds performance to your bike more than wheel set, they give you speed and buy the right set you get durability and the ability to maintain if needed. If you save 1gram on a wheel set it like saving 3-4grams as once they start rotating the base mass increases 2 x 4 times, so save 100grams your actually saving 300-400grams this is hugely significant when our body struggles to push out .4 (400 watts) of a horse power.
Before we delve into the technicalities of the wheel in a Nut Shell - what you are looking at is a strong set of Wheels that use a 40mm Carbon faring attached to a wide Alloy rim that is engineered to suit 25mm wide tyres, ABEC 9 sealed bearings are liquid smooth and there are precision mounted into the Alloy hubs, with bladed aero black steel spokes – They are fast and durable and YES you can ride Mountain passes with assurance that your rim will not delaminated and they will remain predictable and give modulated braking in wet conditions – All sounds good that because they are Great Wheels for us mere mortals that ride without tech support and truck full of wheels for the different conditions and environments that you may encounter on demanding ride. Think of them simply as being Fast and Reliable Aero wheels that are still reasonably light - sounds simple but there are so many wheels out there that don’t measure up.
25mm Tyres are all the rage because they are proven to be faster and more comfortable and when used with a wider rim they work even better as they sit into the rim more and are even more aero.
You can run lower pressures 25mm tyres sometimes as low at 80psi and still be quick, generally 25mm tyres will feel a little slower, but the testing proves they are faster, the slow feeling is more noticeable especially when your fresh but when your beat and grinding out the last few watts you have in the tank you will notice that the wheelset/tyres are working with you more and you are not fighting the constant irregularities and vibrations of the tarmac anywhere near as much as you would with a 110psi 23mm width tyre.
The basic science of it is that when a 25mm tyre hits a small bump like a 3mm pebble for example and instead of tyre hitting this and get a small deflection upwards it absorbs and wraps around the obstacle so there is far less deflection up and more forward momentum is maintained. Over a 1-2hour ride how many 2-5mm irregularities in the road surface would you ride through? That’s 100s of deflections that you will be carrying more momentum over in a standard 1-2 hour ride and that adds up to more distance, more comfort and less watts used.
The Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon Wheel Set has set a new benchmark for modern wheel building, these are is one of the few wheels that is certified to carry the exacting quality assurance standards set by independent international governing body – ASTM.
The Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon Wheel Set with total rim height of 52mm cuts knife-Like through head winds and noticeably carry’s more speed better than traditional non-aero rimes. The external rim width measures 25mm this ties in perfectly with 25mm width tyre with so you get a matching perfect Aero package – the Carbon part of the rim measure 40mm high, combine this with 12mm Alloy rim height the total wheel package is 52mm without tyre height this give you a easy to manage wheel in cross winds but has enough profile to make a significant difference to your average speed.
Descending while tucked in “Tour De France style” they carry exception speed but are still very confidence inspiring because they have balanced strong feel with assurance of an alloy braking surface. If you are staring down the barrel of 15 -30 min downhill with some hard braking and high speeds this is of significant importance as you don’t have to worry if your wheel is going to delaminate because your braking on a Alloy surface. Some full carbon wheels can suffer from delamination as the rim braking surface can get super-heated when braking hard for long periods and at some point the resin that that holding the carbon fibre together starts to turn to liquid at this point things become dangerous for the rider.
If you want Carbon/Alloy Aero wheelset that you can easily maintain and will give strong predictable performance on all sealed surfaces in all conditions look no further.
If you are heavier rider in particular – that’s about 65% of us, and you’re in the 80kg – 100+ kg these are one of the few uber high end wheels that take the abuse better than others, the 60-65kg boys can ride almost anything. Don’t forget these come with High Quality Tyres, Skewers and Rim Tape so they represent great value.
